The Truth Path to Happiness

Headed to my 10 year reunion I can’t help but remember when it all changed

I studied political science at an elite women’s college. I shouted, “Down with the patriarchy,” with my sisters. And one day, after graduation, I realized that the one person standing in the way of my happiness was myself, because I did not allow it of myself.

I didn’t believe I deserved to feel good because I wasn’t “far enough” in my life. There were so many reasons not to feel good. I wasn’t “done” lining up the career, the job, the boyfriend, friends were mad at me, my apartment had a crack in the ceiling, I didn’t make enough money, I didn’t know who I was yet, etc.

There was always something saying inside of me, “I can’t feel good now.”

I finally let go of why or how that limiting belief got there, whether it was the patriarchy, capitalism, classism, something about me or the people who had treated me badly, and I just took responsibility upon myself and said, “I’m sick of this. It’s time to feel good. As good as I can, like it’s the goal. It’s the project.”

Nothing anyone else told me was working. I had taken action on the typical roadmap to happiness, the hard work, good grades, great college, etc. But instead of being sore about how I put all that work in and it didn’t seem to amount to anything that made me feel good, I decided to try to figure out my own way.

I always pray that it will be in the healthiest, most highly aligned way, with no harm to other people…but in the end it comes down to am I willing to feel good?

And when I say, “YES, I DESERVE TO FEEL GOOD SO I WILL,” I know, this isn’t even really about me. This is my higher calling. This is rising above the cycle of endless suffering.

This is the true revolution for all of us as human beings.

May we learn through joy from now on, and no longer need suffering to guide us on our spiritual paths. It’s a new day. A new order. And I choose love. I choose to feel good. Will you?

Feeling good is not about you. Self love is NOT about you. When you love yourself, you give others permission to do the same, and you inspire them to feel better. By helping yourself, you change the world.

On my path to feel good, I learned that feeling healthy pleasure is about embracing, channeling and joining with the divine feminine.

The divine feminine is my jam. I’ve always been much more attracted to divine feminine energy than the masculine in spirituality. I feel it is my mission to write, express and be in this energy as much as possible. That’s my gift to the world. That’s the secret we’ve been looking for. It is the medicine our society needs.

It’s because our culture is so masculine.

I’m not speaking about patriarchy, although, ask me to and I will surely wax on for hours. I’m talking about the drive to produce. This is something I have naturally had in me from a young age: the urge to be of use in some way, to be productive, to produce results, to progress to the next level in a goal or in a project. I didn’t feel right unless I was working towards the completion of the goal. This is a very masculine drive and I’ve naturally integrated it.

To be honest, often I met my goal and then felt nothing: no lasting satisfaction. This is a bad sign. This is a sign that the goal was not led by spirit, but by ego. Ego doesn’t feed the spirit.

My spirit demanded more feminine!

To complete a project so that it is satisfying and rewarding, there must be both feminine and masculine components.

If you make a living writing, creating and/or serving others, then you have to sustainably find a balance between these different forces or you will burn out. You just can’t tap into spirituality, creativity and empathy without the feminine sustaining you. Which means you’ll fail to produce good work or help people anymore if you don’t receive feminine pleasures in your life.

And yes, okay, maybe, you don’t *need* to do this for work. For some jobs, you *can* burn out and still keep going through the motions…but then that’s sad—isn’t there more to life? Why not feel good in your body? Why not embrace feeling awesome as a higher calling?

Of course your ego will tell you, “I would, but I can’t because…” Yes, there are people around the world starving, suffering, who really can’t change their lives at all…but I’m going to guess if you are reading this then you have a modicum of choice. And if you still don’t think like you have power to feel any differently than you do now, because it is just that bad, give this a shot:

Decide to see it a different way. Just decide to be open.

Here’s a prayer you can use to help you be more open to solutions on this:

Goddess, how can I enjoy my life more? How can I end the things that cause me suffering? How can I be open to see that I can have more pleasure in my life and enjoy it all the more? Is it possible for me? Help me to see how.

Or modify it for your words to make sense to you. Prayer is feminine to me because it creates openness. When you are just the tiniest bit open, amazing things happen.

That’s what the feminine is all about. It’s about manifesting desires you didn’t even know you had, in a way that’s better than you asked and prayed for. It feels so good.

To me feeling good is about feeling beautiful, sexy, successful, and accomplished—just for breathing air, just by being myself. It’s that feeling of, “I made it!”

I’ve found this place also creates better writing and creating, and draws a crowd.

Find a way to feel good to help others. It’s not about you.

“Who am I to write this book?”
“I’m not a very good writer. I can’t spell or use grammar right.”

I’ve had the pleasure and honor of being asked to open for a wedding! Last week, on April 27, 2019, I played a show at Teavolve in Baltimore. The couple wanted to celebrate their love publicly by making their wedding at the open mic!

To make it all about love, I wrote an original song for the occasion, which I call, “Spare a Moment.”

It was my job to introduce the pair, say something about love, and do my “Sofia Wren” thing.

I was joined by a few other attendees at the Open Mic, who were amazing on piano and djembe (drum). Grateful for them, as well.

Here’s the recording of the Love show! In the videos:

  1. I start the first video on my song, “Spare a Moment.” This is my first ever performance of this new song. You can rewind the recording if you’d like to see my opening remarks about the cute couple.
  2. This was followed by my cover of, “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” by the Beatles. Both songs are in the first video below–I want to hold your hand was cut, so it continues into the next video.
  3. Keep watching the second video if you’d like to hear the bride and then both love birds play ukulele. Enjoy!

And the rest of the song…

April: Get More Done by Letting Go

Here is your message for the month as we move forward from the Full Moon. This is for the next moon cycle. It’s inspired by the card that I pulled from the Tarot for us now, the Ten of Wands.

This is an excerpt from my forthcoming book of interpretations for the whole Tarot deck. Take a moment to be open to any positive shifts that may occur as you read this sacred writing and remember to breathe.

Keywords: Weight, Heaviness, Overload, Overwhelm, Details, Cords Pulling, Obligations, Deadlines, Multiple Projects, Irons in the Fire, Chaos, Full Todo list, Compact Schedule, Heat, Nerves, Stress

Let go. Let go of the details. It’s all too much. The Ten of Wands appears when there is a recurrent vibe of too much going on–whether it’s energy coming at you from other people, obligations, items on your schedule, or things to be done, it’s a lot.

You can only access the solution to the problem at hand when you let go of everything, and in doing so you embrace something new. With so much energy already present this moon cycle, it may surprise you to think that the solution has anything to do with adding something else to the mix. But this something is an entirely different element that will balance your situation.

So I ask you, when there are so many details seeking order in your life in the coming month: Can you be something deeper? Bigger? Can you hug all the pieces to yourself and add an extra, missing, ingredient to glue it all together?

That ingredient is soul. It is the breath. It is mindfulness. It is divinity. It is something bigger. It is self love. It is patience. It is belief in the grander things and in yourself. What is missing for you? Whatever it is, that’s the important element that you need.

Start where you are planted: what is the obvious next step or what do you feel called to do? Trust yourself, as any lack of trust of your inner voice will only increase the weight of your burdens. Don’t listen to what you “should” do, or what the rules say you ought to do; listen to what you want to do, what you feel, or what you know you need to do. Hopefully your experiences over the last few months have helped you hone this intuition down to a science.

Helping yourself can be ego based (or not). But truly focusing on your needs and boundaries is actually often a selfless thing to do, counter to what you may have learned. You have to do this to write or create.

Having needs and boundaries is an essential part of being a human being.

We are all human, if you think that you are above having needs or boundaries then that is ego. As a human being you have been gifted with life, and it is your job to cultivate the flame you have been given.

Calling the pursuit of a need or placing of a healthy boundary “selfish” is a barrier to protecting your energy. You need to cultivate this energy to make faster progress as a writer, creator or overall human being.

And the best part about it is that it is not even about you.

This took me a long time to understand because I used to worry about causing problems and being selfish when I had to talk to someone about my needs or boundaries. Saying no was a problem.

I’ve gotten a lot better at this with age because I have seen how it harms me, and then other people, when I don’t honor my needs. And I can’t do my mission without it. Embracing this isn’t even about me, I realized. I’m actually doing Spirit a disservice if I don’t do this work because then I end up not functioning as well and not doing what I feel I am supposed to be doing to make Spirit happy.

Not taking care of yourself, not setting boundaries or pursuing your needs is actually a very ego-driven thing to do.

You may think it is selfless to sacrifice or overly accommodate other people. I disagree. I actually think that Spirit wants everyone to honor the natural impulses, needs, and boundaries that we have. This is an organic process. To train yourself that you don’t need things so that other people can have more, is actually selfish. This is you proving that your ego and your control can be used to increase your worth through self sacrifice.

It actually is setting you as different from other people. It is the ego that feels different, including feeling less then. Your spirit knows that you aren’t actually different and you have to admit you have needs like everyone else. You have feelings like everyone else. And you need to have boundaries like everyone else.

I recognize this can be obnoxious and all things must be balanced. My needs do not override another person’s needs. I do not need something from a particular person. I do not need others to change. We can always move on and enter different connections with other people. I do not need a particular person to supply a thing, although I need people and I need things.

I have some more radical things to say as I continue the subject of, “It’s Not About You,” from my earlier post.

Again, one of my big things is that if you want to write a book or do other creative work, you need to know that it’s not about you.

Someone asked me, “Sofia, what about memoir? If you are writing a memoir, isn’t that about you?”

My answer is that, it is, and it isn’t. Actually, memoir is something that I write, but I find that I overcome the hurdles of stopping and starting and procrastinating–and all the rest–when I remember my big purpose: to help other people, maybe, or basically just to do it because Spirit is guiding me to. Total surrender. From that place it isn’t about my ego at all. Wow! It’s a lot easier to make progress in that zone.

Completing your project and living your purpose isn’t about you. Writing a book, creating music, selling your latest coaching program or creative offering, the spiritual work you want to do–it’s not about you. It never was.

What’s really cool about this is that it means you can’t fail. Since it’s not about you. You’re just putting guidance into motion and trusting that inspiration, that something bigger, to guide your actions.

Here are some more of my recent posts on the topic of “It’s Not About You,” specifically how to navigate our dreams about helping other people.

Because what people don’t realize is that it is possible for helping people to come from the ego. Sadly, I’ve seen a lot of news come out about spiritual leaders doing bad things that hurt people. There are many spiritual leaders who are actually leading cults that disempower people. It’s possible to start a charity and have the funds go nowhere but your own pocket. The people doing these things might have even thought this was all helping people!

And that’s just the big stuff, haven’t you ever experienced when someone was trying to “help,” but really ended up making you feel worse? How can we avoid that?

The key is to understand the dangers of how the ego can play around when you try to help people.

Much of this information comes from my fancy Masters in Spiritual and Pastoral Care from Loyola in Baltimore. Enjoy!

Start here altruistic ones: Helping people is not a panacea for the ego. In fact there are many ways people “help” that is ego-based. Sometimes it doesn’t matter, but other times helping people from ego motivation can make you less helpful or even harmful to the other person. So watch out for these if you want to write or create something to help someone, or even just do so as a friend or fellow human.

1. Projection. This is particularly uncomfortable for the other person because it is very confusing. It is known as “counter transference” in the counseling world: when the counselor looks at a patient and projects their own issues and personality aspects onto the person they are talking to. They aren’t really seeing the person they serve and their own issues get in the way. This is often what people do when they are giving other people advice: they are speaking from their own experience and value system. This is so common this is taught to every counseling professional! If they can make this mistake, don’t you think you might, too?!

The more I live on this planet the more I learn that other people are different and many people have different life lessons they are supposed to learn. One man’s poison is another man’s cure.

Example: Someone is crying. You feel bad for them and afraid, you think, “Oh they need a hug!” (This is because you’d like a hug in this instance.) You go in for a hug and they freak out and run away. What happened? You overstepped! You didn’t check to see if you are the same. They were feeling trauma from being physically assaulted and did not want to be touched right now. It’s ok to make mistakes, but this our ego that drives us.

I don’t really like it when people project on me because I am sensitive and it’s confusing, and then I have to tell the other person they are wrong and then they get defensive and argue with me. It’s really tiring especially if I’m in a place where I need support. A lot of times I don’t really need advice. I just want to be heard and listened to and told that I make sense and that they have faith I’ll figure it out eventually on my own by listening to my own guidance. But sometimes advice is ok, that is, when the words they say come from the right energy—not a place of ego or projection—when they are really coming from spirit and connecting to my soul.

2. Abuse and/or Enabling. Some people covertly abuse or insult others and then brush it off and try to cure or save the person they hurt. They may not even be consciously aware of this. This makes them feel like a good person when under doubt. It may make someone dependent on them. It makes some people feel superior and better or more evolved than others when they help people, like they have value and self worth because other people are worse off then them. That’s not a great way to build your self worth—by feeling better than other people. There are better ways. Ways that are less likely to result in disrespecting, or enabling, or even abusing other people so that you feel better about yourself. I’m hoping anyone reading this wouldn’t do this, but seriously consider it a possibility that everyone is capable of this, so that you don’t fall into it by mistake.

The ego is a part of humanity and if you think you are too good to ever get a little bump in your self worth from feeling more advanced than someone else, I think you’re nuts. We can all do this, and you have to be self aware so that you catch yourself from causing harm. Some pride is okay, especially for some people with a lack of it; you have to really be open to guidance on what is right for you, the other, and your situation. Likewise, it’s not as deplorable, but helping someone to the point that they can’t function on their own without you and are demonstrating unhealthy or harmful behaviors is enabling and not a good way to help. Pray and seek help is all I can say. I don’t have easy answers on this.

3. Ignorance. The ego doesn’t know what is best and puts its foot in it. Premature judgements, suggestions, looking to rules for guidance and a one sized fit all pat solution to every problem is an issue. Watch out for the words, “I’ve seen that before.” Make sure it really applies and isn’t a premature judgement. To help someone you need to be willing to be ignorant, powerless to help and not know anything. You don’t know their life. You are not God, you just hope to help. Then be totally open and listen both to the other person and your heart for guidance. This is why I pray. Because I don’t even know what to do most of the time, and I just have to hear. It actually often works out once I release control and what I think I know; I’ve helped some people in some pretty intense and unique situations this way. This also helps you continue to learn.

There are exceptions to every rule, and the most important things are the energy stream you come from to guide you and the impact you create with your words or deeds.

Are you ready to:

  • Stop overthinking your writing or creating, and putting extra pressure on yourself so that you’re just blocked?
  • Find a pace that works for you, so you can enjoy the process of writing or creating, and meet your deadline?
  • Start focusing on how many people you can help instead of stop worrying about what other people think?
  • End the stop-start cycle so you can write or create consistently everyday, and get it out there into the world?

March Message: Defender of Truth

Ready to write or create something new? Here’s your #intuitive full moon message so you can make faster progress this moon cycle. This builds on the last few months, so refer back to the older posts to get a more complete sense of what is going on. March’s message is Queen of Swords.

Keywords: Powerful & Intelligent Service to a Higher Power. Truth. Justice. Balance. Mastery. Cunning. Strength. Strategy. Intelligence. Discernment. Intentional Action. Clear Headedness. Telling Truth from False.

The Queen of Swords is a defender of truth. She has absolute mastery over her thoughts, emotions and actions. She understands how she is connected to the web of life and what the ramifications of her actions are.

One of her challenges is to release the things that are not serving her: she is good at that, but sometimes she can go too far. She can be a little too cutting. The lesson is that you don’t need to do everything alone, but who do you trust? And who do you listen to? Softness is important as well as hardness.

Above all she believes in a higher power that moves through her when she is quiet to listen with an open mind, and she believes in ideals like truth, justice and discipline. These ideals inform her actions and demonstrate who she is.

This cycle learn how to cooperate with others and be open to collaborative energies. Whatever you are driven to achieve: it doesn’t need to be as hard as you think it is. There are still more things to learn even if you are a master.

You understand balance is necessary, but now you translate this understanding into action–you know this is the true test of what you know. You commit and move forward through persistence, patience and putting a strong will behind your intention and purpose.

Learn to juggle the need to play multiple roles and balance different energies. Exercise control while releasing control when necessary, too. Allow yourself to be guided and a servant of a higher power and you will find yourself lifted up to a position of sovereignty and righteousness.

This is a clip from my upcoming book on Tarot. Sign up for the newsletter below for a full reading every month.

I have some radical things to say.

If you want to write a book or do other creative work, you need to know that it’s not about you.

Completing your project and living your purpose isn’t about you. Writing a book, creating music, selling your latest coaching program or creative offering, the spiritual work you put out–it’s not about you. It never was.

It means you can’t fail.

In fact “you” is a concept that is based in the ego. We all have an ego, that’s not a “bad” thing. In fact it is the ego that latches on to this idea of being “good” or “bad” in itself. The key is to go beyond these dualities and see the big picture.

If you want to be successful, stop thinking about what you are doing (or not doing) as a writer or creator and what it says about your character or talent. A lot of people think a lot about what people will think about them, or how good or not good their work is. What is more beneficial to focus on your habits, the result of the behaviors and actions you take, and the energy you are expressing.

When you act on the direction of your soul, your purpose, or your “higher self” (note: watch out because calling anything higher or better can get wrapped up in ego) you actually have to release taking personal credit for these things. You still get to take credit for taking the actions, because to do so you often have to really work and practice to stay optimally productive and not succumb to the resistance or other habits we all can fall into. But you aren’t, yourself, totally the creator of the impulse for these effective behaviors.

You don’t get to totally take credit for being the genius that made it all up. Because the true inspiration is an energy, a drive, an impulse that is so beyond you and me: it is spirit, it is All that Is. That is beyond “you,” beyond “me,” and to try to take full responsibility for that is hubris.

So get over yourself. If you feel bad about yourself for not being where you want to be, let it go. If you think it will make you look silly or wrong to change the way you do things, let it go. If you think it will help you to prove yourself in the eyes of others, let it go. If you think it will change somebody’s mind, let it go. If you think reaching your goal will impress someone, let it go. If you are scared of disappointing someone, let it go.

I also believe that you can make faster progress on your book or creative work by releasing expectations.

If you think the work will institute massive world change so that you are a global leader, let it go. Yeah, that’s a hard pill to swallow, I know, but lately I have realized it can be an ego trap that creates stops, starts, and bad behavior. Just be happy that writing will change one person’s life, even if it is just yours.
You will change because you are finally surrendering to your purpose and doing the REAL work you know you need to do. When you are in that place, it’s pretty crazy how authentic you end up being, and how driven you are. Then you end up helping a lot more people without even trying so hard. I know you are skeptical, “Letting go of my goals helps me??!” Yes, it does. If your goals are ego driven, they actually suck energy.
I promise you this makes it easier. Fueling your process on your ego will start up your engine but then leave you stranded in the middle of the desert with no one to call on. Fueling your process with your purpose will keep you going even when you can’t see two inches in front of your face. I promise. It’s not even about you.

Just do the work. Just do the work. Just ride the best feeling energy and get inspired, and see what the inspiration wants you to do. Just do it. Just do it. Stop thinking with ego.

LIFE IS A PARADOX. It can be about you, but really not.

Just BE you. Just BE the truth of you–the paradox is that when you are you, you are really not you. When you are really BEING you: you are all, and you are a tiny little piece. Do your piece to be ALL of who you are. Just do it!!! BE you and do you. Now. Don’t stop. Just keep doing the you that’s not really you and see what you become when you let it all go and just ACT on your inspiration like it doesn’t even reflect anything about you.

Yes, you may be seen for more of who you are by listening to your calling. You may end up on stage in front of hundreds, millions of people. Your videos or songs may be streamed. Your books may be sold. You may make millions. You may change lives.

But remember this isn’t really about you.

Are you ready to:

  • Stop overthinking your writing or creating, and putting extra pressure on yourself so that you’re just blocked?
  • Find a pace that works for you, so you can enjoy the process of writing or creating, and meet your deadline?

You’ve tried it all. You done writer’s groups, courses in writing or art, you’ve tried to have a friend or business bestie holds you accountable, you’ve tried to do it on your own and you keep having writers block every few days– or you are not doing it at all.

So here’s what I’ve created for you. I’m offering personal support on this journey.

Your results would be accelerating your progress towards all of your goals especially your writing, your creating or business creation goals, so you can make a huge impact, being YOU. • End the stop-start cycle so you can write consistently everyday and get it out there in the world.

It’s time to stop making excuses. Go here to talk!

Now, I know some of you are all set with today’s training but some of you want or need more. I’m moving to Japan and I’m only taking 3 or 4 new clients. There is an investment but we will work together and get you on a writing plan that works for you and keeps you going when the writer’s block rears it’s ugly head. I can’t even describe to you what you would get out of working with me because everyone is so individual and finds their own way to rock their purpose and take their writing and creative work forward into the world.

For example, a client recently worked with me to jumpstart her book. She had dropped it for 6 years and hadn’t worked on it at all. By the end of three months, she figured out a way to work on her book as a part of her day job as a teacher, so she is basically developing the book every week for her classes. Now she cannot fail! What seems obvious now after three months was a solution that eluded her for 6 years. Now she is moving forward and can no longer have any excuse to get that book done!

So do any of these descriptions sound like you?

–You are not moving forward consistently, you are stopping and starting on your projects and goals. You have writer’s block every few days.

–You feel pressured and overwhelmed or you’re unmotivated to work now

–You’re sensitive to feedback from people in your family, friends, work, other coaches, readers, clients, or other critical people you seem to attract like lovers, etc.

–You’ve had problems growing up, critical family members, or had toxic relationships.

–You still haven’t reached where you want to go

–It feels like a strain to get there

I’m not taking everyone, this is definitely an interview process to see if this is a fit and that you can get the most from working with me. But I’ll make sure everyone who talks to me gets tips, recommendations for other resources or just general clarity about where they are going and what they need to get there–even if we aren’t a fit to work together. But if it sounds like you need me and I could work deeply with you, I’ll let you know on the call.

February: A New Cycle

Are you a writer or creator? Want to make faster progress?

Here is your message for the month as we approach the Full Moon. This is for the next moon cycle. It’s inspired by the Ace of Swords Reversed that I pulled from the Tarot. This is an excerpt from my forthcoming book of Tarot.

It’s time for a cleansing, a letting go, a division. This begins inside with a decision, a clarity, a commitment that determines what you need to do for everything else.

It’s time to sort energies into two piles: the kind of energy you are going to take with you in the future and the kind you are going to leave behind. You will have to mourn everything you lose and change even if it wasn’t working for you. Perhaps you have some delusions or illusion. But it’s time to get clear on what you really want and if the things in your life stand in your way or support those goals.

Examine your ways of thinking. There may be limiting beliefs you need to clear from your mind. You may need to release unreasonable expectations other people are trying to put on you. Clear cords and connect to your purest core essence energy to have the highest wisdom, discernment and judgement.
