Creative Process: Follow the Butterflies

fingers rest on a pile of index cards. The cards are spread in a fan, each showing a peak of handwriting in pencil.

If it makes you nervous because it seems so big, that’s a sign. Follow the butterflies. They show you where you need to go to make your mark on the world!!

If you are overwhelmed make your goal smaller. Aim for a short time period of trying, or approach the first step as practice. Come on, you can do it!!

I’ve done this every day as I write a new Urban Fantasy novel, Dark Legacies, Book 1 of the Blood Witch Series. It’s nearing completion and now I have the big important scenes. There hasn’t been a day that I haven’t had butterflies writing this. But I know the principle of butterflies showing us our dreams!

Not to be confused with straight-up fear of danger. Sometimes our nerves are an alarm system, but when it comes to creating… Writing… Doing your purpose…I think the real danger is getting to the end of your life and having regrets about what you never tried to do.

Make Your Mark: You have to be Seen

This is for you if you are an entrepreneur with a launch schedule, a writer with a book coming out, and so on. This is for you if you have to be seen.

There’s a lot going on in the world. An entrepreneur today told me that it’s hard to know what to post or not post. Is it still okay to be promoting her course? She knows it is, heck her family needs her to make that money and she has people to help and talents to share. But still there is a voice in her head asking, is she being sensitive enough? It makes her question herself every step of the way.

My first thought for her was that this is what she is meant to do. We are all here to do something, to make a mark in our own special way. Some people are giving bottles to protestors, some people are on the streets, some people are trying to be good policeman, and some of us are at home making stuff and wanting to share it. What’s your gift? How are you here to make your mark? It depends on who you are. This was her thing, and I knew it was important.

When I said this to her she said it felt right. She also remembered all the things she was doing to try and be a good ally: support she was giving others and introspective work inside to be more aware of her own biases. She’s been posting support, too, and I encouraged her to share the process that is helping her work on herself so others can benefit as well, which happens to be something she is teaching for the course she’s launching. Her course will totally help people be better on so many levels.

Some of us need to be seen right now. If that’s you, then that’s what you got to do. But if that doesn’t feel like you, that’s okay as well. We do not have to all do the same thing. Figure out what you need for your own balance (so you can sustain any efforts you are making) and what role you can play right now to be supportive to the current situation: the Black Lives Matter movement, COVID-19 prevention, the people you are here to serve in your unique capacity.

Connect to your soul. Pray for safety, so you can feel safe to be seen if that’s what you need to do. What does your heart call you to do today? It is okay if you don’t have the big picture yet, do what you can right now.

Look for more on “Make Your Mark” a program dedicated to helping you go from overwhelmed and defeated by the state of the world to empowered, clear on how to make your individual contribution to make your mark in the world.

Honoring the Dead

In total humility and respect, I want to spend some time to focus on those who have died from police brutality. It will not bring them back. It will not be enough to truly honor them, which is why it is only a humble offering to their spirit and memory. They should still be here.

Rayshard Brooks, I am so sorry. You should have been here longer.

As I began writing this post and during the sleepless hours while I continued to contemplate it here in Japan, I wondered what I could do. What can I do that I’m not doing? What’s in my power to do? What do I have the skills to do? What can I commit to do?

I’ve decided to share posts about what we can do to make the political system work for us. There are many protests that have resulted in zero changes in American history, I don’t want this moment to be anything like that. I studied political science ten years ago. I can share what I know so we can take action together.

This weekend’s violence will not be the end. I wish it were the end, but it’s been going on a long time and every day there are more examples of excess force. As is becoming more and more visible, there is no end until there is change. And that change must be real.

Perhaps that change is coming. That would be momentous. I believe law enforcement is sick and needs remedy, involving a complete overhaul of the system. There cannot just be “training” done. If people are being shot in the back when they aren’t even being violent, there’s no training that will work–the wrong people are behind the guns. We need a complete culture change within these structures, starting over.

Rubber bullets and gas are also being abused with protestors. The journalists documenting are being arrested. None of this is ok. It never has been. We need to change everything.

Last month, I received an email that my Tarot readings were missed! So I thought I would include one this month, like old times. This message covers where we are at this month as we move into July (and possibly the whole rest of the year!).

First, take a moment to pause and breathe. Are you open to insight? Set your intention to feel how you want to feel in your life overall (you can be specific) and then decide to be open to any positive shifts that may occur as you read the writing below.

The wands symbolize our passionate feelings, motivations, creativity, and the actions that come out of that. When the Two of Wands appears, it is a reminder that we do not control everything: we are part of a universal connection to something greater than we have to communicate and collaborate with.

As you go through your days, follow the drops of inspiration that the world around you provides or provokes. It won’t always be comfortable. It may make you feel things, but to feel things is to be ALIVE. That red color in this card is very aligned with living fully and feeling all the things.

You have the ability to stake a claim and set your own intentions for what you would like to do or accomplish, as well as how you’d ideally like to feel, but the universe around you also has a plan. It may shake you up or throw things off track, but ask yourself what you can learn from this and how you can turn it into a growing experience.

Don’t try to force circumstances to fit your plan. You have to dance and adjust accordingly to everything happening day by day because in some ways you have to surrender to the flow of the tides. You will accomplish more this way.

Navigating when to compromise, and when to assert more of your point of you will be tricky. Continually come back to your creativity or spiritual practices to help you to figure out your next moves. Create moments of pause to be open to inspiration coming from beyond your singular point of view, and take heed even if it is inconvenient.

Always know what to do next with a free reading for the month! Get it delivered to your inbox here.

Philosophy: When I’m Not Getting Enough Done

It can be really hard to make ANY progress at a time like this. It might seem like since you can’t do a lot of things you are used to, that you have all this free time. And surely with free time you will be really productive. But NO! Actually this is all super weird and it’s normal to be UNproductive and just need to put your head in the sand, barely able to drag yourself to the shower (Heh. Have I said too much?) Achieving anything is herculean and extraordinary.

The Creative Progress facebook group is a free space to expressing your creativity, take care of yourself on a level that helps you be more of the person you feel designed to be, and be positive. We all want to achieve goals, but we make taking care of ourselves the #1 priority. It is so easy to get down about everything that isn’t done, so that is why being positive is so important. I truly believe it helps all of us to get more done in a way that feels good in our soul. So I encourage you to use this space to vent in the “poop thread” about stuff that is getting you down, to dream big, to celebrate SMALL microscopic victories in your day, and be super duper nice to yourself. Because the most important thing is you feel supported by you, for you, and loved no matter what you accomplish or don’t accomplish.

When I take this attitude of total nonjudgement and self support….that I end up remembering that being creative is FUN and it happens naturally after a while!!! We do not want anyone burnout or feeling overwhelmed or buried under the pressure. But boy it sure would be nice to do something cool that you love doing, that makes you feel expressed.

If you haven’t joined us yet in the group, come on over! It’s free.

New Song: “Tides” out now on Patreon

Now available to all patrons. Enjoy! Lyrics below. Click to access the shortcut.

I search my eyes midsummer’s night

got nothing left to fight

can I see what’s left of me

what door to knock to take flight

Is there anything left of me?

I’ve never been this far along

I feel the tides pulling me strong

to a new day, a new dawn

Be free my whole life long

I woke up and realized

thought I’d never compromised

but all this time I can’t see, what’s closest to me

has kept me mesmerized

I round the clock going clockwise

wanna see pride in your eyes

there’s no end in sight, I just want to bite

the hand that feeds

Is there anything left of me?

nothing I recognize

CHORUS

Never been this far along

Never been this far along

I feel the tides pulling me strong

Be free my whole life long

Feel the tides pulling me strong

To a new day, a new dawn

I feel the tides pulling me strong

Never been this far along

To a new day, a new dawn

Be free my whole life long

What should you be doing right NOW?

There are so many things to do. What is first?

I believe in perfect timing: there is a way to maximize this moment so that everything else feels better and easier.

For example, I followed this technique and found the perfect time to call my bank. I’ve tried several times over the past month and had to hang up because I was waiting too long, but I really wanted to reduce my business loan interest. After doing this meditation, I ended up deciding to call again. I finally got through with zero wait time. Now I have three months with zero interest! It felt so good to get that off my list. It gave me momentum so that I got a ton of other things done, too. When I relaxed at the end of the day, I just felt so proud of myself.

Use this video to get clear and motivated on what is next for you. You’ll know what to do next because you are that tuned into your intuition. Watch the video or hear the audio below.

Philosophy: Caring for Fear, Not Fixing It

We live in a ‘fix it’ society. We seek the magic pill to make things stop. We turn the channel and avoid looking at issues. We run away or act delusional. We like to dismiss rather than consider. We hope to move on quickly and never look back.

Some things aren’t so simple. In life if you feel bad, you aren’t necessarily doing something wrong that needs fixing. There may actually be something right with you that other people do not understand. You may not understand yourself, either. So many of us are perpetually lost but do not realize it until we have gotten far, far away from our center. All of this human and as far as I know there is no pill for it, and I wouldn’t have it another way.

Lately “Care of the Soul” by Thomas Moore has been on my nightstand. It’s a book I began as I studied for my Masters in Spiritual Direction. I’ve been quiet about the skills I’ve developed in helping people through difficult times because spiritual caring is hard to put in words. His are some of the best I have seen.

He says rather than curing or fixing, what we need is caring. We need space and time to be with the moment, to connect to our soul whether it is weeping or joyful. There can be a beauty in it, and I don’t mean shutting down any negative aspects to decide it’s all “for the best.” There is another way to be present and go deeper into dark waters so that you can truly pull the thread on your journey into the human experience.

How do you truly live if you do not wade deeper? Will life just be shallow? How do you find yourself if you cannot admit when you feel lost? To see the sky you need to close your eyes, feel it and then refocus.

I help people create the time for this sort of deep dive into their fears, while helping them to connect to their spirituality for peace. I rarely publish rates for these spiritual care sessions because I like to work out prices with people individually. We see if we can find a mutual fit, if not no worries.

If you need space to care for your fears, worries, and connect to something deeper, let me know. It’s not my goal to lead you to believe anything in particular, I’m spiritual not religious. My goal is to help you to connect to yourself and whatever is meaningful for you that will provide answers and a sense of grounding. Contact me to talk more about your journey and hear my recommendations.
