The Problem of Labeling Your Spiritual Path (or Not)

youngSofiaWrenNitchie

Do you worry that you need to find what you are or who you are? And that to do this you need to label yourself?

If you think you have to fit into a box, find your true spirituality and name it officially–well you don’t.

I know what it’s like to want to fit in or be accepted but you might limit yourself in the future by trying to fit within a label including a certain movement, or religion.

Over the years many of us are drawn to different things, and our practices and beliefs and intentions and interests will all evolve with us.

Deciding you fit into this box or that will create an internal resistance to change.

Unfortunately fitting people into boxes is another way some people may dismiss you for you beliefs–which is probably what you didn’t want to happen.

In this video I talk about my struggles with identifying my personal brand of spirituality, and how I struggled with various names like “witch” growing up and into my twenties.

I talk about the struggle to reclaim “witch” after being called it as a name, and why I feel like there is more to life now that I’ve “come out” as a witch with my story “How I Became a Witch and a Writer” in 2012. It’s sort of funny, but once you let the cat out of the bag sometimes the label isn’t so important any more!

I talk about the difference between getting excited by a label or title or idea, and identifying with it to the point that you feel it describes everything you are. Honestly, I much prefer just to describe myself as spiritual (although I will admit I do love witches and mermaids and other awesome things…)
