How do I talk about the Cat Emoji on Linkedin?

I’m sharing this with you because maybe YOU have topics that feel edgy to talk about or write about,

but you know your soul is calling you to figure out HOW to do it.

You have something to say as a leader, that’s not fully comfortable.

I want to open the curtains so you can see behind the scenes and learn from my process as I do the same thing.

Thank you everybody for the support of the fundraiser that I announced in my post last week.

It’s such a difficult topic: FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) for girls.

Yeah, it’s not super fun and it rattles a lot of taboos to talk about it. 😻😻

But if people don’t talk about it, it’ll probably just continue to be a reality for many, many girls.

Out of sight, out of mind…has worked WHEN?

My heart goes to girls around this great Earth who are struggling.

It can be hard as an observer in another country since I only have so much control and so much I can personally contribute.

BUT

my heart is big enough and strong enough

to survive the bruising that comes

from caring in a big way.

And so is yours.

That’s why I’m open to taking the risk to talk about it.

I appreciate any support, financial donations but also even just emotional solidarity,

as it really helps me feel like I have sisters and brothers on this path who care about women’s rights even in far off countries.

Thanks you so much for all the good vibes you’ve been sending my way.

We have some great stuff cooking as a result of your support.

This week we got word from Ginny Robertson that we can run a full page ad for the nonprofit in her magazine On Purpose Woman as her gift to the cause.

BTW She and I had a great talk on video,

about “Is writing in the first person is dead?” See the video here

I’ve also found a possible long term funding source for the nonprofit and am working on a grant application.

I appreciate all kinds of ideas including “funding and spreading the word” ideas!!

Do you have any of those? Hit reply and let me know.

OK so…….. what’s this about 😻 (the cat emoji) + Linked in??!

Last week, an amazing supportive gal told me she loved my email and asked me if she could help spread the word about the fundraiser.

She is active on Linkedin and wanted to share there, but my post there didn’t have all the same information written out (as the email).

She said if I wanted to put more details in a post on Linkedin, she’d be happy to share it.

And then I started scratching my head on how to do that,

and I couldn’t figure out why it was so hard….

finally I put the problem into words as:

“How the f do I talk about pussies on Linkedin?” 😻😻

>My first feeling was to laugh out loud,

because it’s such a ridiculous combination of things.<

Linkedin is basically the patriarchy’s home ground, right?

And some people cannot handle hearing about 😻 problems.

Many years ago, I testified in the Maryland State house about decriminalizing cannabis for 😻 women’s problems,

after I used cannabis to help with the excruciating pain from getting an IUD.

(I don’t regret getting it, but advil does not make the cut for after-care.)

I remember the cringe on a young state congress person’s face as I shared my statement at the podium.

My sentence began, “I felt deep pain in my….”

Then he winced like I was about to punch him!!!

He thought I was about about to finish my sentence to say 😻!!

I said, “…Pain in my core.”

Then he opened one eye and peered around in relief.

Yes, that really happened.

People are afraid of 😻

I wouldn’t normally talk like this as it sounds so vulgar…

But let’s deal with it.

It does actually matter.

Why?

Because I’d love to invite people like you to talk about ending 😻 FGM.

I would love us all to work together to help activists put on this amazing event.

Now and not just next year or one day.

This is a real thing that we can do about 😻 FGM,

a problem that has continued for generations, and

it could change a girls life so she never, ever has to go through the pain of this in her lifetime,

for every intimate experience 😻 or childbirth she has.

It’s the most elegant event solution to 😻 FGM I’ve ever heard of,

– using culture, art and words from scholars to change people’s minds, from the top down.

– dispelling the myths that make community leaders support it as a tradition.

– influencing leaders to see it differently and spread word to their audiences, and end FGM.

BUT CAN I SPREAD THE WORLD?

CAN I TALK ABOUT 😻 ON LINKEDIN?

So people know about the fundraiser?

My first feeling is no.

The two things do not mix.

Let’s be honest:

Whenever anyone wants to talk about “Women’s empowerment” or “Women’s history month” or “Yay women’s rights”

AKA

Super VAGUE women’s empowerment stuff,

that’s all fine and dandy.

But don’t get too detailed about it.

To talk about what that specifically looks like in Sierra Leone,

😻 where not only do 80% of women there have already experienced FGM,

😻 but it’s the third highest maternal birth mortality rate in the world, and

😻 over 70% of girls under 16 have been sexually assaulted…

That’s a lot harder to talk about.

Even though talking about girls rights there is basically the SAME THING as women’s empowerment generally,

Mental wires cross when I try to post about 😻 FGM on Linkedin.

And that’s when I was able to consciously realize just how hard this really is to talk about 😻 FGM in a public sphere.

There’s a lot of reasons why 😻 FGM is an edgy subject.

I don’t think I need to list them.

But listen, I’m not done pushing forward on this topic, just because it’s edgy.

It’s not the first time I’ve battled the silence created by taboos.

See my previous example of speaking in the MD house about decriminalizing cannabis for medicinal purposes, as part of a fully successful movement that changed the law.

That’s just one example in my life and entrepreneurial journey.

In the face of feeling “not allowed” to tell my own story or thoughts, I’ve done so over and over again.

Often times it is a process.

What do I do with topics that make me uncomfortable?

Often, I need to go inwards and process it, or do so in small circles with safe people.

(Which is why I’m so passionate about creating safe spaces like the Summer Writing Group opening in May.)

It can take time, and work,

But eventually I can take that story into the world and speak through the silence.

I may not have FULLY cracked the code on how to talk about this devastating 😻 issue,

but I know it’s something I’m probably going to talk about for as long time.

As it takes for it to become a non-issue.

And that could be years.

This is by no means the only thing I’ll ever write to you about by email because I know you really want to hear about WRITING,

but if you stay forever, you’ll see this fight for girls rights with Her Future Foundation 😻 is a theme I’ll come back to once or twice a year.

The UN has set a goal of 2030 to end FGM.

Honestly, that may be over-optimistic with the way things are going, but like I say–every girl we are able to reach matters.

So eventually I will get there.

It’ll be more comfortable.

And that matters because:

Speaking past the taboos is how I let other girls know that their struggles are understood.

I care enough about their future to speak out.

To say that girls matter.

And do something about it.

That’s what is really important to me.

So I will keep winding my words, speaking through the silence,

using my writing as leadership to try and give more people information about 😻 FGM for girls in Sierra Leone

at least once-two times a year.

That’s how I let people know how they can help.

And Now it’s your turn.

But I’m sharing this with you because

maybe YOU have topics that feel edgy to talk about,

but you are being called to them.

When you know it’s your soul, listen to the call:

ENGAGE THE PROCESS.

Learn from my process.

Yes, it can take time.

No, you just don’t have to post whatever your first thoughts and feelings are.

Following the call can take time.

I mulled on everything I sent you all and took that time.

Sometimes that is better.

See what I’m doing and know you can do it, too.

You and are aren’t so different. I’m not made of different molecules, I’m human like all the rest.

I’ve just been talking about edgy or uncomfortable things longer as a writer.

That’s how I know what the process is.

There is a process. You can go through the process.

Just breathe and know that you are not alone.

We are in this together.

Thank you again to everyone who has been supportive.

Thankful for every single donation even if it is a few dollars.

Thankful for every kind work of support or help to spread the word. It makes a big difference.

How to Change a Girl’s Life

I’m always afraid of triggering anybody.

In fact it’s probably a personal flaw as it prevented me from sharing my own story for many, many years.

Sometimes it is important to talk about hard things:

things that are sad or unfortunate, not right or unfair.

Otherwise, how will they change?

All things in balance of course, but it’s been really important for me to talk about something that really triggers me a lot–

and I hope not to trigger you too much, but it is possible I might.

This is it:

In Sierra Leone over 80% of women have gone through FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) already.

And more little girls will follow.

Like I said earlier this week:

The past isn’t something I can change.

But going forward, I can try to make the life of one girl better.

This email is about HOW we can do this.

So please keep reading.

The Problem:

If you don’t know the details about FGM, it’s intense no matter how it is done. It’s unmedicated alteration of a woman’s anatomy that frankly I don’t think should be altered.

Women don’t heal up permanently so it causes pain through a woman’s life.

Childbirth, sex…more pain, less pleasure for a lifetime.

It’s not ok to me.

I honestly never want FGM to happen again ever to anyone, but if someone was an educated adult making a free will choice, I’d let it go.

The problem is the girls are usually age 8-16.

They don’t have a choice.

They might not know it will cause life long problems.

They are too young, too dependent to say no.

The stakes of saying no are usually high–abandonment, starvation, exposure, or other dangers like predatory men.

So I’m triggered.

But I’m doing something about it, speaking about it.

And so is Her Future Foundation.

And we could use your help.

The Opportunity:

People have different stories in Sierra Leone about why they must force girls into FGM–

some are very confused or incorrect.

One myth is that FGM is required by Islam.

Most of Sierra Leone’s people Muslim, 78% of the population.

We don’t want this myth or any other myth about FGM to continue.

In local politics, people are using FGM as a way to gain favor.

They offer to pay poor families the fees for getting FGM for their daughters.

That would increase numbers, so it is an important time to set the record straight.

The Solution:

Her Future Foundation wants to host a large event with influential leaders like Imams and Islamic scholars.

We want to reach the people of influence in Sierra Leone.

This event is themed on traditional Ramadan festival celebrations, just around the corner.

With traditional song, art, drama–but themed around FGM– we can use the combination of intelligence and creativity, to teach them the truth about FGM and eliminate the myths.

The goal is that after this event, those powerful stakeholders will go back to grassroots communities to educate them, too.

They can influence others in a way that an outsider may not.

These people can help older generations let go of forcing FGM on young girls.

The Team:

It’s always important to me to respect the local country in another place when trying to help.

Everyone involved in this organization besides me is from Sierra Leone.

We are working with adult African activists in the area of FGM.

We also have activists who as young girls have been educated or supported by the organization’s programs.

Ariefa, the organization founder, has worked for 9 years against FGM. Just last week he spent hours negotiating to pull a girl out of an FGM ceremony and put her back in school.

The Challenge:

Her Future Foundation currently operates without funding.

Their team is ready to put on this event on May 18th and has begun organizing but there is one thing they need:

the funds to put it on.

We hope to raise enough in the next few weeks to help put this event on and make a huge impression in Sierra Leone.

But we need donations.

Donations coming in as soon as possible (even small ones) will help us feel confident that we can make this important event happen.

Please help us spread the word about this cause.

Donate if you are able, even if it is a small amount.

Read more or Donate here

It is a secure site.

To me, taking a stand for this cause is powerful and healing.

It DOES matter.

GIRLS matter.

Just like you mattered when you were a child, even if things did not always feel that way.

Let’s show that girls matter by supporting this cause:

If it helps even one girl, what a difference it will make.

The Win-Lose Fallacy of Service

NEW Article on writing = leadership. The WIN LOSE Fallacy of Service.Being of service doesn’t have to be a WIN LOSE situation or make you a martyr.

Just a reminder that service doesn’t have to be win-lose or make you a martyr.

We need more people modeling service as win-win.

That’s why I wrote this new free article “The Win Lose Service Fallacy” on Linkedin, as part of a series on Writing Transformational Leadership.

When you are feeling good, confident, loved and able to step up as a leader,

You inspire more people to do the same.

Win-lose service is unsustainable and models self-sacrifice to everyone else.

It teaches people that feeling loved, confident, and filled up, is bad.

In this system that is a sign, you have more to give and therefore are bad, selfish or lazy. The best people give all they have to others.

There are the givers and the takers; truly no one can be comfortable for long.

In win-win service, we can model that many people can feel good at once.

You are allowed to strive to feel good and, yes, it is possible to help other people simultaneously.

Creativity and curiosity allow us all to fix our sights on finding more win-win solutions which in the end will help more people.

Read my short article on the subject so you can start exploring win-win solutions, not just win-lose.

Big News is Coming

FYI this post may be a bit triggering.

Something very important is brewing

I’m going to tell you more in the next 48 hours…

But here’s why it matters so much to me.

Growing up I received many messages as a young girl,

that my thoughts and feelings did not matter.

I was subject to emotional abuse from one of my legal guardians for 10 years which has had devastating effects on me.

The worst part was that no one noticed.

When I tried to speak up, no one heard me.

Maybe it was denial.

Most of it was my word against theirs, and adults doubted my perception.

Maybe it was the belief that little girls should listen and obey adults–who always know better and want the best for them.

“It’s tough love. You’ll understand when you are older.”

As a result of this lack of belief and much gaslighting, I came to doubt my experience.

Was this toxic?

Was this bad treatment?

Did I know what I was talking about?

That’s really the most heart breaking thing to me in the end–that I stopped believing in myself 100%.

That is so damaging.

Unfortunately, this is what happens when girls don’t feel like they matter.

And it happens all the time.

My story is not that unique.

But luckily for me, I found a way to empower myself.

I discovered writing everyday, as I shared recently.

The power of writing helped me hear myself think. To believe my feelings again.

Ouch means ouch. Fear means stop. Anger means I need boundaries.

Writing is my way to stop gaslighting myself, day by day.

THIS IS WHY I want everyone to know the power of writing.

When you write things down or even dictate them, it’s a lot easier to figure out just about anything.

I wish I could go back in time, pull that little girl version of me aside and tell her that

what you think and feels does indeed matter,

you matter.

To tell her that she is cared for, that she will be ok because I am here to keep her safe–

however,

I cannot LITERALLY go back in time and stop my own childhood abuse before it ever happened…

It’s not physically possible.

But what I can do is say to another girl:

YOU MATTER.

Maybe you’ve had these negative messages, too, and you know how important this message is for young girls to hear [FIRST NAME GOES HERE]:

GIRLS MATTER.

And that’s why I’m so passionate about working with an organization called Her Future Foundation.

It is an nonprofit in Sierra Leone dedicated to empowering girls and ending abuses like FGM (female genital mutilation).

In that country over 80% go through FGM, and it mostly happens to girls under 16, but even as young as 8.

There is no anesthesia, it’s not done by doctors.

It can really mess a girl up.

Girls don’t have much of a choice because if they say no, often parents completely abandon them, refusing to give them shelter or food.

Out on their own, they end up vulnerable to sexual assault and other things.

To protect girls from irreversible harm to their most vulnerable and private areas is so essential and basic that I can’t think of any better cause–

ending the myths that parents and communities believe in that makes them force this on girls.

While there are many large things going on in the world, a lot take gazillions of dollars and years to solve.

This is something I truly believe that everyday people can make a huge impact on right now.

Last year we worked together to raise almost $2000 in different fundraisers for Her Future Foundation, which helped them gain NGO status and helped the founder survive a medical emergency.

This organization Her Future Foundation has been working since 2014 to empower girls.

They are part of a movement that is working.

Last year, the New York Times wrote that girls in Sierra Leone are pushing back against FGM.

The percentage of girls receiving FGM has begun decreasing.

The work on this cause is gaining ground and it’s the time to keep pushing forward!

To me, taking a stand for this cause is powerful and healing.

I want to share that feeling with you and invite you to take part.

Together we can support local activists and stop FGM.

If it helps even one girl, what a difference it will make in her life.

In the next couple days I’ll be sharing how you can help.

Together we can end FGM so more little girls can feel like they matter in this big, wild world.

Please keep an eye out for the official announcement in the next 48 hours or join my newsletter hear to get the announcement by email.

So many realizations about writing to share

I sincerely hope your last week has been peaceful…Mine has insane. LOL

💜 Last Monday I decided to postpone the writing challenge to March 28 (read more below)

💜 Last Tuesday I got work that my car needs a new engine.

Getting that news out of no where right before lunch, on an empty stomach, was a shock 😳🤑

Ouch.

BUT by the end of the day, I decided it’s okay, and I’m not fixing it.

It got me thinking about a world (USA included) with fewer cars and how different it would be.

Going slower, taking the bus, trying to ride my bike more.

Not so bad. But different.

This is where my mind has been going lately–

I’ve been thinking about the future a great deal and I need to talk about it.

💜 The possibilities and change.

As somebody who just lost their dad in 2021, the second of their parents, I’m thinking on a different level than I used to.

🦋 Certain things draw my attention more–

mean more,

matter more.

Others, less.

It began as a personal tragedy/emotional dumpster fire (to be clear).

But I don’t think that the resulting overall change in perception is bad.

💜 I’m thinking bigger now, which is allowing me to make some big changes in my life.

My father died about 1.5 years ago, I still mourn him daily, but now that I’m on the other side of some of it, I know that I’m really just at the beginning of the next chapters to come.

🦋 and CHANGE IS COMING.

For the last 10+ years I’ve been a writer and a healer, and one of the themes I’ve really focused on has been personal expression.

💜 That’s been huge for me because coming into writing really helped me to kind of find myself and express who I am.

It helped me stop hiding from others, and most of all hiding from myself.

It allowed me to be more me.

☘️ BUT I SEE NOW WHERE I MISSED SOMETHING.

Last week I had a big realization.

There are some other parts of writing that are really important that I haven’t spoken about as much.

Themes that have always been huge themes in my life.

Like service and leadership.

I can list the hours I spent volunteering through Americorps at 22, and the teenage dreams of becoming a diplomat and public servant.

Then there are all my afterschool activities. The personal explorations of power detailed in Freedom Year.

The business I started because I really wanted to help people and have it be a win-win.

THE DOTS WERE ALL THERE.

But I never connected all the dots.

Dots:

☘️ Writing is healing.

☘️ Healing is service.

☘️ Service is leadership.

There are things I have doing as a writer and telling others to do for reasons that I haven’t named, or haven’t before now

AND NOW I FINALLY REALIZED WHAT I NEED TO SAY!

Suddenly my political science degree and what it taught me about peace and conflict studies feels relevant to my life now.

Suddenly my M.A. in Spiritual and Pastoral care and what it taught me about spiritual leadership makes sense today.

Suddenly all my life, career, and business experiences all add up…

HERE IT IS:

🦋 Writing is transformational leadership.

BAM!

🤯🤯🤯

And now that I see all the dots connect, I realize I have a whole lot to say about this.

💜 Here’s some thoughts kicking around my head right now:

☘️ Writing is a tool for self expression as I have said–but it also creates the possibility of SELF LEADERSHIP.

What to do, where to go, how to say it; writing can and will help you find clarity on what to do next.

It helps you figure out what you have to say–plus it’s a tool to get you into the best possible place internally to say it so it’s empowered and not coming from a funky emotional energy that could do more harm than good.

☘️ You begin by leading yourself through writing and then from that self-sourced place, you use writing to serve, transform and invite others into deeper transformation alongside you.

If you are a business owners, coach, healer or artist, I see people like you doing this with words every day.

Inviting people in, telling stories, sharing information…setting seeds of change. (This is why I love business owners so much.)

Writing can instantly shift someone, or it can be the invitation into an offer that changes someone’s life more deeply; thus creating transformation.

☘️ We can’t continue the communication mistakes of the past over and over.

Division and war are not the legacies we want to give to the children of this planet.

Writing must be informed by a commitment to transformation from the very start.

Offer possibilities and solutions from a place of peace. Let go of staying in division as much as possible!

No, you can’t change every single thing on planet Earth alone–you don’t have that power! But you can do something:

Create bridges of peace through your writing.

🦋 NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME.

I know that this is a time of change.

In this moment, huge things are changed and changing,

as they will be during the whole period in which I may be living on this planet.

🦋 And during times of change, leaders are needed.

💜 Wise leaders.

💜 Transformational leaders.

💜 Not leaders of the past, the leaders of the now and the future.

YOU CAN BE ONE OF THEM.

(If you aren’t already now!)

This is the moment you have been waiting for.

Your soul is here on this planet at this exciting time for a reason.

💜 YOU 💜 ARE 💜 NEEDED 💜 HERE.

☘️ To step into leading yourself.

☘️ And quite possibly, to step into leading others.

Writing is an amazing way to do that.

I’m here to help you use writing to

🦋become the leader that you need yourself, &

🦋 transform others.

You already are that shining leader–writing helps you see it, access it, and expand it

☘️ so you always know what to do next to serve the people you are here to serve.

💜 So how can you move into greater service with your book or business right now?

….To start, how about just get yourself to write more…

Yes! Do that!

Also:

🦋 Asking the right questions provokes a deeper kind of insight.

☘️ Receive free prompts (questions to prompt your writing) and community to help you write for 7 days, during the free 7 day Heartfelt Writing Challenge. Be guided to think more deeply.

☘️ You’ll also gain momentum to make writing a daily habit so you can unlock inspiration for your book or business, and gain insight on what to do next in business or life.

Is this the next step of your transformational journey?
