It’s scary but worth it!

Authenticity. Vulnerability.

There are many ways to define what makes your writing or your words AUTHENTIC.

πŸ¦‹ For me, I just think about the opposite.

When I was growing up and I was so scared to be myself.

πŸŒͺ️ I was scared of being judged.

πŸŒͺ️ I was scared of being yelled at.

πŸŒͺ️ I was scared of being noticed at all.

I had gotten far too much negative attention.

It outweighed the risk of receiving anything positive.

In an article recently  I said this acted like an electric fence, the thing they use for dogs–

When you get enough negative feedback, you start to avoid places where you might get a shock.

You keep avoiding areas and you don’t even notice if

🌷 the people around you have changed,

🌷 the world has changed,

🌷 where you live has changed.

Even if it’s safe now…

You are still avoiding shocks even if they really will never come.

But still you stay in your little box.

For me I had to stuff all my individuality in that box.

My creativity.

My passion.

My joy.

My silliness.

AND I WANTED THAT BACK.

I have lived under the weight of fear in my life.

I know how it limited me and made me silent in certain ways that I did not enjoy.

πŸ¦‹ So I sought to lift that weight. That’s what authenticity is to me.

🌷 I found safe spaces to voice, question and probe the areas I was scared to talk about.

🌷 I did little experiments, telling stories, sharing thoughts within safe spaces.

🌷 And then I brought some of those stories and thoughts to the public in writing.

In each little experiment I found out if anything bad would happen.

Mostly it didn’t. Nothing was dire.

In doing all of this my life became more free.

And the thing that really became addictive for me:

πŸ¦‹ Not only did I become more free, but people said my writing empowered or inspired them.

That’s what got me so hooked, realizing that:

BEING YOURSELF CAN BE A SERVICE.

Since I discovered this, I couldn’t get enough.

FACING MY FEARS BECAME A HIGH VALUE FOR ME.

It became a lifestyle for me to keep exploring and sharing my voice (with as much safety and intention as possible) even if it made my heart pitter patter.

Because I have done that over and over again,

I have FELT THE LOVE of

🌷 friends I have created and maintained,

🌷 clients I have worked with (and love),

and so much more.

Writing was the way I got into being more authenticity.

I found it a lot easier to be vulnerable that way.

I’ve truly created a second family from being more myself in my writing.

So when I talk about authenticity,

πŸŒͺ️ I’m not talking about airing every single little THING that enters your mind.

πŸŒͺ️ I’m not saying you MUST tell everyone your biggest fears and insecurities or secrets.

πŸŒͺ️ I’m not demanding you publish every unfinished draft or “you are fake and superficial.”

NONE OF THAT.

The point is:

there are things you could be more open about that could change your life and someone else’s life.

And you get to determine specifically what those things are.

It doesn’t mean share about ALL THE THINGS.

Just THINGS.

Things that are worth opening up about because it’s a service to you and others.

Because it’s changed my life so much for the better, I love to help people

🌷 who have something inside of them that hasn’t come out yet,

🌷 who haven’t found the audience that loves your writing yet.

🌷 who want to get the writing for your book or business to the point where it feels good to share

And then keep writing, editing, and sharing it until you feel the reaction you are hoping for.

Because, yes, writing for yourself is amazing and necessary and part of this process.

But when you show up to be of service (and yourself) and

SHARE WITH THE WORLD

that’s how you will feel the love:

🏡️ the confirmation that you are safe,

🏡️ you belong, and

🏡️ you are NEEDED here.

“In keeping our vulnerabilities private, we never get the chance to know who else is out there, who else might understand or even be helped by whatever it is we’re holding back.

When someone chooses to lift the curtain on a perceived imperfection in her story, on a circumstance or condition that traditionally might be considered to be a weakness,

what she’s often actually revealing is the source code for her steadiness and strength.

And as we’ve seen plenty of times in our history, the strength of one resolute soul can become the strength of many.” – Michelle Obama, The Light We Carry

So don’t forget that being yourself & facing your fear can serve someone.

That is possible for you!!

Does writing make your heart go BOOM BOOM?

🏡️ Exploring how to tell a vulnerable story.

🏡️ Stepping into an area that makes you feel like a fraud .

🏡️ Expressing an opinion when you’re afraid people will say you are wrong.

It can make your heart pound or show up as:

πŸŒͺ️ Indecision

πŸŒͺ️ Not Knowing What to Do Next

πŸŒͺ️ Uncertainty

πŸŒͺ️ Confusion

πŸŒͺ️ Writers block

πŸŒͺ️ Procrastination

πŸŒͺ️ Stalling

πŸŒͺ️ Self doubt

πŸŒͺ️ Disquiet

πŸŒͺ️ Anxiety

πŸŒͺ️ Stomach aches

πŸŒͺ️ Absence of Peace

One important thing to keep in mind is that you can share your writing in stages.

I highly recommend finding a safe reader or a group where you can practice sharing.

First share your writing on a smaller scale, way before you share it with the world.

πŸ¦‹ Then you can improve your writing and get more comfortable sharing it.

When you are a writer or an entrepreneur in the beginning of a project,

🏡️ having a safe space can really help you launch a website, book or business offer with confidence.

I used safe spaces like this for many years.

πŸ¦‹ They gave me clarity about what I wanted to share, how to share it, &

the courage to press publish on my business ideas and my book.

And because I got SUPPORT to face my fears and smooth out those rough edges,

my life, my business, my relationships are all different now as a result.

🏡️ The Summer Writing Group can be that space for you to

get more comfortable writing and sharing about difficult things.

Not only does it include live classes with Q and A,

but it also includes a private group where

🌷 you can share one written piece per month (up to 2 pages) for editing and feedback from me and others in the group.

The Β Summer Writing GroupΒ  can be your safe space to share.

If you sign up, this group would be available for you for 6 months, June – November.

Write With More Ease | Creative Values Pt. 2

πŸ¦‹ πŸ’œ πŸŒΏ

Can you relate to this?

I don’t know about you, but πŸŒͺ️ when I feel like I don’t have enough time,

🏡️ listening to myself goes out the window, and

🏡️ my self care goes out the window and

🏡️ all these other good things go out the window.

Giving yourself more time to do things–and taking a deep breath–

is a great way to make sure you are taking care of yourself, as well as getting more things done.

And for writers, some stories take longer than you may think they will.

My first book took 8 years to write, edit and publish.

Sometimes it takes time to produce something you are PROUD of.

I value having enough 🌷TIME 🌷and not feeling rushed because

πŸŒͺ️ living under a constant deadline negatively impacts my mental health πŸŒͺ️

and the same goes for the people that I serve.

That’s why for my 🏡️ Summer Writing Group coaching program, I originally planned for it to be seven weeks long,

but in the end I decided to make it six months. πŸ΅οΈ

Why?

Because I really wanted people who wanted to write to get space to

🏡️ connect to themselves on a much deeper level,

🏡️ have work-life balance, and

🏡️ share more deeply, richly and easily in their writing.

Which is the perfect vibe for writing during the summer, don’t you think?

What if you let yourself have a little bit more time?

to write

🌷 a new bio for your website,

🌷 or your first blog post,

🌷 your sales page, or

🌷a few more chapters of your book.

No matter how long it takes–at the end of it, you will STILL be farther along than you are now.

🏡️ What would it feel like to have six months rather than seven weeks to make progress? πŸ΅οΈ

Giving yourself time makes it so much more spacious,

so much more expansive and

allows you to slow down listen to yourself and be kind to yourself.

I’m super excited for this summer’s writing group where we will all have the time to do this in a community together!

The Summer Writing Group opens next week!

There are already about 8 people signed up, continuing on from the last group.

There will be MAX 8 spots for new people to join.

If you want to join us, I recommend joining the waitlist as the group sold out the past 2 times and the spots are limited.

Focus on your values first

If you want to write or create, take note:

When you focus on different values, you do different things, & you get different results.

You want to write for a book or business.

Your creativity has been pushed around in the past, but you are ready to flourish like a beautiful flower. What helps you?

Another way to ask this…

What do you need to value so this process of writing for a book or business is less difficult,

and instead more easy, more fun, more beautiful, more awe-inspiring, more magic?

Key word: YOU

What helps YOU…

Rather than waiting for permission to bloom from outside of you….

Rather than applying tried-and-true systems someone else created…

Rather than beating yourself up for not being like someone else or that your writing process is different…

Try putting your Value on flowering from the inside out, listening to yourself–

Try seeing the ultimate authority of that process as being INSIDE of you–

Try treating your writing process as an experiment where you learn and grow all the time

Prioritize your inner experience.

That is a huge shift in values.

What you value will completely guide your creative process–it’s the kind of thing you don’t realize is important until you have a creative guide or mentor to show you things like this. I’m here to help you if you need to write for a book, business, or other cause.

My summer writing group is opening up this month, and I’m sharing lots of good stuff to consider here about writing up until the doors open.

The strongest part of the summer writing group’s lesson plan is to nourish you with creative-nurturing values to help you write, rather than crush your spirit under red marks from English class.

This shift in attitude will change your writing AND your life!

Get a taste by hanging out here with me on my blog for the rest of this series, or by being on my email list.

How did I get involved with a nonprofit across the planet?

If you are wondering that, flip to page 18 of the newΒ OnΒ PurposeΒ WomanΒ magazine.

Check out the free magazine

Big thanks to Ginny Robertson, creator of On Purpose Woman Magazine, who donated a full page ad for the nonprofit I work with–Her Future Foundation.

Recently I wrote a grant application pro-bonoΒ for this nonprofit, Her Future Foundation!!! Fingers crossed that Her Future Foundation will receive a year of funding to help 100 girls in Sierra Leone.

I’ve been running a fundraiser for their event to end FGM. It has now raised $255 for girls who can really use it. Thanks everyone!

This fundraiser still serves a very important role for short-term funding to try to help girls avoid going through FGM in Sierra Leone.

What’s going on in April

Well, how are you doing?

Living in Wisconsin this April has been very strange. We had several 80+ degree days of sunshine, followed by an inch of SNOW.

Today it’s back in the 50s. And it’s raining. A lot. β˜”

Other than trying to wrap my head around that, it’s been busy over here. I’ve been juggling:

  • Writing pro bono for a grant application

I’m trying to get long term funding for the nonprofit Her Future Foundation in Sierra Leone. I’m running a fundraiser in the meantime which you can find below.

  • Planning an interview series on the topic of Writing as Transformational Leadership

We start 11 am EST on April 28th! I’ll send more info on that in a few days. It’s part of the gear up to open doors for the Summer Writing Group.

  • Getting ready to release a free class on how to make writing for your emails fun

I really, really enjoy writing to you. My email newsletter is my safe space to share. I’ll tell you more about how you can have more fun with it, too, when I’m ready to share about it next week.

More on all that next week!

And here is a roundup of things that are ready for your reading pleasure:

Help us end FGM. I'm fundraising to help a nonprofit that serves vulnerable girls in Sierra Leone. Help us end human right abuses for girls. Read now. A picture of 5 indigenous people in Sierra Leone holding signs that say "Yes, we can end FGM together"
New Article n Writing and Leadership. "Nervous to Write About This." On doing the work to write and share about something edgy or uncomfortable when your heart keeps calling you. Read now. A picture of crumpled papers next to a notebook.
New Video. Is writing in the 3rd person dead? See the delightful chat I had on this topic with Ginny Robertson of On Purpose Woman Magazine. Picture of the two of us talking on zoom. Watch now.

How do I talk about the Cat Emoji on Linkedin?

I’m sharing this with you because maybe YOU have topics that feel edgy to talk about or write about,

but you know your soul is calling you to figure out HOW to do it.

You have something to say as a leader, that’s not fully comfortable.

I want to open the curtains so you can see behind the scenes and learn from my process as I do the same thing.

Thank you everybody for the support of the fundraiser that I announced in my post last week. β€‹

It’s such a difficult topic: FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) for girls.

Yeah, it’s not super fun and it rattles a lot of taboos to talk about it. 😻😻

But if people don’t talk about it, it’ll probably just continue to be a reality for many, many girls.

Out of sight, out of mind…has worked WHEN?

My heart goes to girls around this great Earth who are struggling.

It can be hard as an observer in another country since I only have so much control and so much I can personally contribute.

BUT

my heart is big enough and strong enough

to survive the bruising that comes

from caring in a big way.

And so is yours.

That’s why I’m open to taking the risk to talk about it.

I appreciate any support, financial donations but also even just emotional solidarity,

as it really helps me feel like I have sisters and brothers on this path who care about women’s rights even in far off countries.

Thanks you so much for all the good vibes you’ve been sending my way.

We have some great stuff cooking as a result of your support.

This week we got word from Ginny Robertson that we can run a full page ad for the nonprofit in her magazine On Purpose Woman as her gift to the cause.

BTW She and I had a great talk on video,

about β€œIs writing in the first person is dead?” See the video here

I’ve also found a possible long term funding source for the nonprofit and am working on a grant application.

I appreciate all kinds of ideas including β€œfunding and spreading the word” ideas!!

Do you have any of those? Hit reply and let me know.

OK so…….. what’s this about 😻 (the cat emoji) + Linked in??!

Last week, an amazing supportive gal told me she loved my email and asked me if she could help spread the word about the fundraiser.

She is active on Linkedin and wanted to share there, but my post there didn’t have all the same information written out (as the email).

She said if I wanted to put more details in a post on Linkedin, she’d be happy to share it.

And then I started scratching my head on how to do that,

and I couldn’t figure out why it was so hard….

finally I put the problem into words as:

β€œHow the f do I talk about pussies on Linkedin?” πŸ˜»πŸ˜»

>My first feeling was to laugh out loud,

because it’s such a ridiculous combination of things.<

Linkedin is basically the patriarchy’s home ground, right?

And some people cannot handle hearing about 😻 problems.

Many years ago, I testified in the Maryland State house about decriminalizing cannabis for 😻 women’s problems,

after I used cannabis to help with the excruciating pain from getting an IUD.

(I don’t regret getting it, but advil does not make the cut for after-care.)

I remember the cringe on a young state congress person’s face as I shared my statement at the podium.

My sentence began, “I felt deep pain in my….”

Then he winced like I was about to punch him!!!

He thought I was about about to finish my sentence to say 😻!!

I said, “…Pain in my core.”

Then he opened one eye and peered around in relief.

Yes, that really happened.

People are afraid of 😻

I wouldn’t normally talk like this as it sounds so vulgar…

But let’s deal with it.

It does actually matter.

Why?

Because I’d love to invite people like you to talk about ending 😻 FGM.

I would love us all to work together to help activists put on this amazing event. β€‹

Now and not just next year or one day.

This is a real thing that we can do about 😻 FGM,

a problem that has continued for generations, and

it could change a girls life so she never, ever has to go through the pain of this in her lifetime,

for every intimate experience 😻 or childbirth she has.

It’s the most elegant event solution to πŸ˜» FGM I’ve ever heard of, β€‹

– using culture, art and words from scholars to change people’s minds, from the top down.

– dispelling the myths that make community leaders support it as a tradition.

– influencing leaders to see it differently and spread word to their audiences, and end FGM.

BUT CAN I SPREAD THE WORLD?

CAN I TALK ABOUT 😻 ON LINKEDIN?

So people know about the fundraiser?

My first feeling is no.

The two things do not mix.

Let’s be honest:

Whenever anyone wants to talk about “Women’s empowerment” or “Women’s history month” or “Yay women’s rights”

AKA

Super VAGUE women’s empowerment stuff,

that’s all fine and dandy.

But don’t get too detailed about it.

To talk about what that specifically looks like in Sierra Leone,

😻 where not only do 80% of women there have already experienced FGM,

😻 but it’s the third highest maternal birth mortality rate in the world, and

😻 over 70% of girls under 16 have been sexually assaulted…

That’s a lot harder to talk about.

Even though talking about girls rights there is basically the SAME THING as women’s empowerment generally,

Mental wires cross when I try to post about 😻 FGM on Linkedin.

And that’s when I was able to consciously realize just how hard this really is to talk about πŸ˜» FGM in a public sphere.

There’s a lot of reasons why πŸ˜» FGM is an edgy subject.

I don’t think I need to list them.

But listen, I’m not done pushing forward on this topic, just because it’s edgy.

It’s not the first time I’ve battled the silence created by taboos.

See my previous example of speaking in the MD house about decriminalizing cannabis for medicinal purposes, as part of a fully successful movement that changed the law.

That’s just one example in my life and entrepreneurial journey.

In the face of feeling β€œnot allowed” to tell my own story or thoughts, I’ve done so over and over again.

Often times it is a process.

What do I do with topics that make me uncomfortable?

Often, I need to go inwards and process it, or do so in small circles with safe people.

(Which is why I’m so passionate about creating safe spaces like the Summer Writing Group opening in May.)

It can take time, and work,

But eventually I can take that story into the world and speak through the silence.

I may not have FULLY cracked the code on how to talk about this devastating 😻 issue,

but I know it’s something I’m probably going to talk about for as long time.

As it takes for it to become a non-issue.

And that could be years.

This is by no means the only thing I’ll ever write to you about by email because I know you really want to hear about WRITING,

but if you stay forever, you’ll see this fight for girls rights with Her Future Foundation 😻 is a theme I’ll come back to once or twice a year.

The UN has set a goal of 2030 to end FGM.

Honestly, that may be over-optimistic with the way things are going, but like I say–every girl we are able to reach matters.

So eventually I will get there.

It’ll be more comfortable.

And that matters because:

Speaking past the taboos is how I let other girls know that their struggles are understood.

I care enough about their future to speak out.

To say that girls matter.

And do something about it.

That’s what is really important to me.

So I will keep winding my words, speaking through the silence,

using my writing as leadership to try and give more people information about 😻 FGM for girls in Sierra Leone

at least once-two times a year.

That’s how I let people know how they can help.

And Now it’s your turn.

But I’m sharing this with you because

maybe YOU have topics that feel edgy to talk about,

but you are being called to them.

When you know it’s your soul, listen to the call:

ENGAGE THE PROCESS.

Learn from my process.

Yes, it can take time.

No, you just don’t have to post whatever your first thoughts and feelings are.

Following the call can take time.

I mulled on everything I sent you all and took that time.

Sometimes that is better.

See what I’m doing and know you can do it, too.

You and are aren’t so different. I’m not made of different molecules, I’m human like all the rest.

I’ve just been talking about edgy or uncomfortable things longer as a writer.

That’s how I know what the process is.

There is a process. You can go through the process.

Just breathe and know that you are not alone.

We are in this together.

Thank you again to everyone who has been supportive.

Thankful for every single donation even if it is a few dollars.

Thankful for every kind work of support or help to spread the word. It makes a big difference.
