It’s possible to change your mind AND get things done.
I already changed my mind about what habits I want to build in the next week— I’m going to share because we need to normalize changing your mind.
This is what happens when you set a goal (like badasses do) but then you gather new information (like smart people do).
It’s only natural to make adjustments in your goals based on new information.
And sometimes you can only gain new information by putting forward an initial target.
It’s like having an experiment and making a hypothesis—no one in science class cares if your hypothesis was right.
The point is just to start somewhere and then gather information so you learn something.
So if you aren’t sure what habit to build OR what goal to pursue next, here’s an example of me just picking something and then making adjustments as I go.
I recommend this approach so you don’t stay in indecision forever!
What happened?
Yesterday I made a video on IG and posted it declaring 3 habits I wanted to grow this week.
One of them was playing guitar daily.
Then…
I was talking to my fiance later in the evening, discussing my day and then I realized…
“Wait, no. It actually isn’t the goal I want to set.”
Not because I don’t want to play guitar every day, that’s fine, I enjoy it for self care.
But if I’m looking at my wider goals it doesn’t make sense.
Ultimately I want to be able to play an hour concert with 12 songs, like I have before.
Here is the thing: to achieve my long term goals, I need more callouses.
I took a 6 month break from guitar this spring and lost them all.
If you haven’t played guitar, the pads of the fingers on the left hand get very sensitive from pressing the metal strings down.
Over time, from regular practice, people build callouses that build resilience so they can play better and longer.
If I want to be able to play an hour concert with 12 songs, my fingers need to be very calloused.
The process of adjusting…
For a while now I’ve been playing regularly enough to build some callouses, but I tend to only play 1-3 songs in a session.
I need to focus on the duration that I play to build up to 12 songs.
So my next step is to aim for 2-5 songs in a session.
Then I’ll have BIGGER callouses. Make sense?
And that doesn’t work for me to do daily.
I’m not prepared to commit that time right now. Also if my fingers are sore while the callouses are healing up, then maybe I won’t play as much that day, either.
So now I’m looking at more of a 45 minute commitment every 2-3 days, verses a 10 minute commitment every day.
And now…
Do I feel the stink of failure? NO! I feel awesome. This works for me and my goal.
Because I am the one who decides if I’m “on track” or not in my life.
Only I know my priorities and I hereby give myself permission to change my damn mind.
The same goes for you!
And if you want you can join me in building your own daily habit—whatever you feel like being consistent at on a daily basis.
