Ask “WHY?” not “WHAT to do”?

So you’ve been through a lot of crap–how do you know what to do next to be more creative and productive? Difficult emotions do make it more difficult to find clarity.

First off, knowing for sure that you want to do something scary can be really hard. If you grew up and you didn’t belong somewhere and you didn’t feel like it was okay to be yourself like me, then it can be really difficult to figure out what your heart is actually telling you to do.

It gets clouded and you may struggle to know, “What is my individual perspective? What is the thing that I really want to do? And can I give myself permission?” Cause it’s kinda terrifying.

Do you have clarity on this? If not, it sounds strange but maybe ask yourself WHY you’d want to do anything scary or difficult, generally (or not).

Do you ever convince yourself not to do something because it is scary? Or do you ever FORCE yourself to do something BECAUSE it is scary?

I’ll admit I’m the kind of person who has forced herself to do uncomfortable things my whole life. I asked my first boyfriend out over the phone, for instance, oh boy the nerves.

I used to be terrified all the time, and then I felt like I had no way out except to push myself to do scary things all the time. It’s led to some great things, but it’s also not ALWAYS the answer.

When is it good to push yourself to do scary things?

What I’ve learned is that while you figure out WHAT to do, you really have to ask yourself WHY you want something.

The reason WHY you do things is what really matters, especially if you’ve been through a ton of shit in your life.

Ask yourself, are you doing it for the right reason?

How do I do this? By writing!

Writing is a great tool to

  • A. Figure out what you are interested in doing and
  • B. Figuring out WHY you want to do it.

So give it a shot— write for a few minutes on your current goals and why they are so important.

Are they important to your heart–the deep down part of you at the core? Are they?

Or are you thinking about something and someone else? Let me know how it goes!
